Programmatic and social advertising solve different problems

DV360 and Meta aren't competing for the same budget line — or they shouldn't be.

Programmatic platforms like DV360 excel at reach and frequency control across a huge inventory of publisher sites and formats, with granular targeting and bidding control. They're strong for awareness-stage and retargeting-at-scale campaigns where you want precise control over where and how often an ad appears.

Social platforms like Meta offer strong first-party audience signal and native, in-feed formats that tend to perform better for direct-response creative built specifically for the platform's format. The targeting is often less granular than programmatic on paper, but the native format frequently outperforms a display ad dropped into the same inventory.

The common mistake is treating them as interchangeable reach channels and splitting budget evenly without a reason. A better starting question: does this creative and message need broad publisher reach and frequency control (programmatic), or does it need to feel native to a specific platform's feed (social)? The answer usually points to one channel doing most of the early work, with the other layered in once the first is proven.
